Mounting and Humping

Many misconceptions exist regarding why dogs mount or hump. Many talk about dominance with this problem. This myth has been perpetuated about dogs being descendants of wolves and in a constant struggle for dominance in a pack. However multiple studies have been performed on wild wolves that disprove this dominant animal theory. It just does not occur. So, the idea that that dogs are constantly seeking out their humans to assert dominance is not backed by science, just myth.

  • Both intact and neutered animals can mount
  • Males and females can mount
  • Mounting is typically affiliated with wanting to be with or to get attention.
  • Dogs will jump on people and want people to interact with them.
  • Humping can be involved with sex or masturbation. This usually includes a series of fast repetitive movements in a sequence and may involve a person or stuffed toy. Both intact and neutered animals can masturbate in this way.
  • Mounting is a normal behavior
  • Because this is a normal behavior and we know dogs will work for food, we can change it! If the dog mounts tell the dog to sit, once they perform the wanted behavior REWARD IT! Dogs Thrive on positive reinforcement!
